USPS Tells Area Church: No Bibles To Soldiers

Alanson, MI (March 31) - When members of the Freedom Church in Wolverine, Michigan, tried this week to send bibles to relatives and loved ones in the war zone, they were stunned to find out that bibles are on the list of prohibited items heading to Kuwait and Iraq.

According to Postal Regulations routinely published and disseminated to all postal facilities, "Any matter containing religious
materials contrary to Islamic faith. . is prohibited." (source: Postal Bulletin 22096 (2-20-03)) The prohibition applies to more than twenty Army/Air Force and Fleet Post Offices that serve soldiers, sailors, and airmen in the war zone. These twenty postal facilities serve the majority of America's fighting force engaged in the war.

Norman Olson, 56, who pastors the small congregation said today, "I am outraged that our soldiers, sailors, and airmen are putting their lives on the line to protect people who cannot and will not tolerate Christianity. Our kids are good enough to bleed and die in some Islamic desert but not good enough to receive a bible in the mail because it might offend some Muslim somewhere. From my experience, soldiers deeply appreciate receiving religious material such as bibles, study helps, and devotional literature. In fact, in the heat of battle or when danger surrounds, ones religious faith is a powerful sustaining force. Our soldiers need and deserve spiritual comfort and support. I cannot recall that bibles have ever been prohibited in past conflicts. Indeed, Americans were encouraged to send them."

Other items that are offensive and/or contrary to the Islamic faith are also prohibited, such as non-authorized political materials,
sexually suggestive magazines, and pork products.

"Our soldiers have died on battlefields around the world and have asked little in return," said Pastor Olson, who retired after 21 years in the military. "It's hard to believe that parents cannot send a bible to their own child in the war zone. Even sadder is the fact that we are being told by the President that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance, and most Americans believe it. It just isn't so."
